Article Abstract:
Ronne Hartfield, one of Chicago's leading arts educators has written an unsentimental but celebratory memoir of her family's mixed-race heritage in her new book, 'Another Way Home: The Tangled Roots of Race in One Chicago Family'. She states that the characterization of the mixed-race coupling became a problem for her family when the 'black is beautiful' movement started, forcing African Americans to assume strict racial identities that did not acknowledge meanderings of their bloodlines.
