Before the California legislature passed the Assault Weapon Control Act of 1989, it was determined by the California Dept of Criminal Justice that assault weapons were not a crime problem. This information was kept secret from the public and the legislation passed.

Article Abstract:
Dave Kopel and Eric Morgan report that the defeated 'Crime Bill' to ban assault weapons would not have reduced crime. The law would have been difficult to enforce and would have been a violation of the Constitution.
