Philadelphia once was the biggest city in the US but eventually was surpassed by four others and fell into a period of decline in which it became the object of urban jokes. Now though it is in the midst of a impressive recovery, as shown by its sightly new skyline.

The nation's second-smallest state is an overlooked autumn delight, with beautiful fall foliage and ocean water still warm enough to swim in. The summer crowds have mostly gone away, allowing travellers to tour the lovely Delaware Bay at a leisurely pace.

Painter Andrew Wyeth lives and works in Chadds Ford, PA, a small community southwest of Philadelphia. Many of his paintings are displayed at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford. Accommodations and restaurants in the region are described.
