Rufus Simpson was one of the first Americans who was struck hard by the gold rush fever in the late 1800s. At age 27, with his wife and two sons in California, Simpson set off for Alaska to find his gold. His letters during the expedition, all full of love and longing for his family, are presented.

J.F.A. Strong: the governor's secret
Article Abstract:
Alaska territorial Gov J.F.A. Strong's secret of being born and raised in Canada was discovered in 1918 after he had served five years in the position. He was discharged by Pres Wilson following the discovery. Strong's achievements included fighting for a bigger budget for Alaska schools.

Irene Sherman: recipe for a bag lady
Article Abstract:
Sherman, 80, was recently hospitalized after living most of her life as a strange but welcome character in Fairbanks, Alaska. Sherman was badly burned at an early age, and lived her life in an aggressive and sometimes rude manner.
