Restaurateur Joseph Muran de Assereto introduced the first expensive Italian restaurant in the Washington area. His restaurant, Cantina d'Italia, which offered authentic northern-Italian cuisine, was opened in 1968 but was closed in 1988 due to tough competition. Assereto died in 1999.

Japanese chef Kaz Okochi's 'Original Small Dishes' have made the Kaz Sushi Bistro restaurant the most popular sushi parlor in Washington DC. Dinner for two in the Japanese restaurant costs $69.
