Holiday magazine suggested in 1936 with its photo of a table setting near a lake that people, who like to picnic, embellish it with real table linens, tableware and a 'fly-proof' food umbrella. The suggested menu included shad roe and crab chunks with creamy French dressing.

Ernst Haas was known primarily for his color photography. When he died, he left 100,0000 black-and-white photos. One of his most dynamic images, a bridge worker on the upper span of the Richmond-San Quentin Bridge, California, is illustrated.
