American women have fewer contraception choices than Europeans, which is why the US has one of the highest rates of unintended pregnancies among industrial countries. This dearth of choice in contraceptives is traced to a lack of incentive for the pharmaceutical industry to develop new products, owing to the numerous economic, legal and political hindrances involved.
