The waters of Lake Malawi harbors high levels of the bilharzia-causing organism, making it unsuitable for water sports. Bilharzia, also known as schistosomiasis, is a parasitic disease with symptoms of rashes followed by fever after 30 to 40 days. The disease can be treated with praziquantel.
