A personal narrative of blue grouse shooting in the coastal forest of southeastern Alaska is presented. The grouse are known as "hooters" because of their calls which have ventriloquist qualities making them difficult to locate.

The sharp-tailed grouse has lived in Alaska since the Pleistocene geologic era, when the area that was once dry land was flooded by melting of the ice from the Ice Age. The habitat for the bird has been expanded due to conservation efforts.
