Alaska was home to a middle-aged Norwegian bachelor who lived in his self-built cabin near the Clarence Strait and its majestic mountains in the 1940s. In contrast with often-surly bachelors in his area, Arnt Pedersen, or Lonesome Pete, was always full of funny anecdotes and stories to tell.

Bounty of beans; the old sourdoughs never ate beans that tasted like these

Beans have been used in Alaska by explorers packing light supplies, by those who only shop once a year and by those needing to conserve space. Bean recipes include Mexican bean soup, sweet and sour beans, peppergrass northerns and black bean burritos.

Fannie Quigley was one of the best loved characters in North America. Although slight in stature, she was an accomplished hunter, trapper, fisher, gardener and one of the best cooks in Alaska.
