Surrealist Rene Magritte painted a somber and paradoxical world, while the paintings of Matisse celebrate order, grace and luxury. Retrospective exhibitions of both artists will be seen in New York City in fall 1992.

Mantua's moody master: America discovers Mantegna

Some 135 works by 15th century artist Andrea Mantegna form a 1992 exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is the first major exhibition of his work in 35 years and includes portraits, grisailles and engravings.
