Thirteenth-century explorer Marco Polo has not received nearly as much attention as Christopher Columbus, yet Polo traveled further, was nicer, and was more accurate in his reports of what he saw. He called exotic places in China and the Middle East by their accurate names, whereas Columbus renamed everything.
