The Mount Marathon race is held annually in Alaska. Participants face the task of running up and down the 3,022-ft. Mount Marathon in the shortest possible time. Local lore states that the event began as a wager among old-timers frequenting the Steward bar.

Fire jumpers are a special breed of fire fighters in Alaska. They are tasked to control forest fires and let them spread reasonably before extinguishing them. Fire jumping training is vigorous, with only a few men chosen to perform the task.
