Geologists have recently discovered that Mt. Churchill in Alaska's St. Elias Mountains is the source of the White River ash discovered in 1892. The ash was originally suspected of having come from Mt. Natazhat.

Alaska has 80 volcanoes which form a 1,600-mile line from the Aleutian islands to the interior of the state. The most destructive eruption in 200 years occurred in 1912 when Mount Katmai spread ash 3,000 miles.
