Old Downtown in Washington, DC is experiencing a rebirth. The area, which stretches between Fourth and Fifteenth streets and bounded by Pennsylvannia Ave to the south and Massachusetts Ave to the north, has come alive again with new restaurants, modern art galleries and the new MCI Center.

An economist recalls his arrival in Washington, D.C., with his wife in the 1930s. Pre-war Washington was hot, as air conditioning was not yet discovered then, and there was an abundance of inexpensive household help. People entertained themselves by watching movies or concerts.
