The construction of a stadium for professional tennis tournaments sponsored by the Washington Tennis Foundation has attracted more spectators. However, this success has also brought with it financial and political problems, diverting the attention of the foundation from its main program which is training young amateurs.

Walter Johnson was considered the best baseball pitcher in his time. Leading his team, the Washington Nationals, to 376 victories in 18 seasons, he was given the honor of pitching the first game of the World Series in 1924.
