Each time a new president is elected, the White House staff faces the task of appointing positions to political loyalists who have scant qualifications. These loyalists are usually placed in appointive positions of government agencies. Some are lucky to be given ambassadorships.

There is a dispute over the siting of a US Air Force memorial at Arlington Ridge, Washington, some 600 feet away from the Iwo Jima, a US Marines memorial, which has been in place since 1954. The new memorial will be larger and of a very modern design.
