Privatising the East
Article Abstract:
The currency union between East and West Germany on July 1, 1990 marked the beginning of a rapid shift to a market economy, with serious repercussions in the east. East German industry was not equal to competition from the West. East German industrial production amounted to less than 50% of its 1989 level at the end of 1991, and experts forecast that East German unemployment will stand at 19% by the end of 1992. The 'Treuhandanstalt' is the government agency charged with privatizing the East German economy, but this task is hampered by factors such as a poor infrastructure and old property claims.
