A scare at feeding time
Article Abstract:
A mother who gave birth to a healthy baby girl in Oct 1996 tells of serious problems which arose when her breast milk failed to come in. She believed for the first four days of her baby's life that she was breast feeding successfully, but the baby's blood-sugar levels dropped dramatically and problems with dehydration developed. The baby spent two days in a special care unit, where she received phototherapy and a glucose drip. The mother feels very resentful that she was not given consistent advice about breast feeding and that the problem was not noticed earlier.
