Article Abstract:
The renewal of Chicago's State Street seems to have avoided the heavily theme-park atmosphere of the Loop. The disastrous earlier effort to make the street an outdated car-free pedestrian mall failed because of the importance of the car. The work of renewal architect Adrian Smith is discussed.

A new boom in homebuilding is occurring in Chicago's North Shore district, with many prestigious houses being designed by renown architect Tony Grunsfeld. Older homes are being razed to make room for these expensive dwellings that suit the lifestyles of the wealthy people of the 1990's.

Heads up: despite the traditionalism of the city's Planning Department and the least-common-denominator approach of many developers, some good buildings are going up here
