New suburbs are being built on the edge of the Western Desert, just north of the Giza plateau, all with impressive leisure facilities, in an attempt to encourage Cairenes to move there and to tempt tourists back to the area. The completion of a new road system around Cairo means the desert is easily reached. The centre of Cairo is also being regenerated.
