The .40 Smith & Wesson cartridge was introduced in 1990 to mixed reviews, but ten years later it is still around and has increased in popularity. Most handgun manufacturers produce a pistol which can take this ammunition and law enforcement agencies use it.

The .40 caliber Smith and Wesson pistol cartridge has grown in popularity since its introduction in 1990. Large US ammunition and firearms manufacturers now are producing the cartridge and .40 caliber pistols for the market.

Smith and Wesson Corp operates a Houlton, ME plant which has grown extensively. In Dec 1992, the Houlton plant successfully produced 250,000 .22 cal sporting pistols.
