The fall of no snowfall
Article Abstract:
Snowfall was late coming to Alaska in autumn of 1998. The ground was still uncovered at Thanksgiving, though the climate was colder and darker. Cross-country skiers were disappointed, while some downhill bicycle racers enjoyed the extended snowless slopes. Other citizens used the time to play with their children and to read more. The pressure of being out of the slopes was reduced, and time was devoted to giving thanks.

Hindsight
Article Abstract:
Two campers on Nolan Lake near Anchorage were experiencing a hot, still day. The lack of wind allowed mosquitos and other insects to proliferate on them in biblical numbers. They fled camp searching for a breeze. Later in the day a drizzle started and suddenly became a torrent. During the next eight hours, all their gear and clothing were soaked and they could only communicate by two-way radios.
