A veteran police officer and trainer discusses the historic an dmodern use of shotguns in law enforcement. The Remington Model 870 and the Winchester Model 97 are examples of classic police shotguns, and more modern models used include Scattergun Technologies' Remington 870-based Standard Model, and the semi-automatic M1 Tactical from Benelli.

A discussion is presented of the development of the semi-automatic pistol as the primary law enforcement hand gun. In the 1960s, police officers began to use semi-automatic pistols as their handgun of choice because they were believed to have faster reloading speed and greater initial cartridge capacity.

Because of the litigious nature of modern society, law enforcement officers must have the best training and equipment available in order to avoid situations that could result in liability. A result of this is a swing back to the use of the rifle, known for its reliable, fast action.
