Britain in the days after World War II was drained of its wealth, and the hearty, hyperactive atmosphere of Butlin's holiday camps provided a tonic, and thousands of families could not afford to travel to the continent or even a stay in a British hotel. Today the same place seems to possess a rich, almost hyperbolic nostalgia- a carnival of innocence, aglow with pure, clean pleasure.
