Washington state's San Juan National Historical Park was jointly occupied by British and US troops between 1869 and 1872 because they countries both claimed the islands, but neither wanted to settle the dispute through battle. Gardens and military buildings from the era can be viewed.

Preserving a treasure

Columbia State Historic Park in California's gold country is still an active mining town, and has many authentic buildings of the old West. It also offers tourists the chance to pan for gold and ride a stagecoach. It was a big mining town in the 1860s.

Worth a gamble

The Nevada Gambling Museum is located in Virginia City, NV. Displays trace the history of gambling in Nevada, starting with the gambling activities of the Paiute and Shoshone Indians. The slot machine exhibit is the museum's largest display.
