Eleven married women serving in the US Senate manage dual-career marriages, different residences, traveling, carpools, soccer practices, and uncertain Senate sessions, are still leading a happy married life. The lives of these women Senators are discussed considering how they manage both political career and a family life focusing on the roles played by their husbands in particular.

Gordon and Sharon Smith are on a mission to find meaning in their adopted son Garrett Lee Smith's death into a closet, the second of their three children, helping to protect other parents from this pain. Garrett was depressed, as he faced learning disabilities that filled his spirit with hopelessness and clouded his future with darkness, leading him to commit suicide.
