A capsaicin-receptor homologue with a high threshold for noxious heat
Article Abstract:
The vanilloid receptor subtype 1 (VR1) is proposed to mediate the response of small-diameter sensory neurons to thermal stimuli. A structurally related receptor, VRL-1 that does not respond to capsaicin, moderate heat or acid, has been identified. It is activated by high temperatures and is prominently expressed within sensory ganglia, by a subset of neurons. Its transcripts are not limited to the sensory nervous system, suggesting that it may be activated by alternative stimuli to heat.

Mechanisms of sensory transduction in the skin
Article Abstract:
The cellular and molecular events underlying somatosensation and the roles of ion channels on the skin are analyzed. The way in which skin's sensory functions are divided among signalling molecules and cell types can be used to break the code underlying somatosensation.

Somatosensory basis of speech production
Article Abstract:
The results of speech production research are discussed. The suggestion that somatosensory inputs related to movement play a role in speech production is investigated.
