A human germ project?
Article Abstract:
The possible link between coronary heart disease and Chlamydia pneumoniae, an intracellular bacterium, has led to full scale clinical trials of antibiotics in the prevention of coronary heart disease. There has been much interest in infections as possible cause of human cancer, and molecular technologies can now identify previously unrecognized infections. Improved microscopy methods have helped in the culture of bacteria and viruses, and a new study of C. pneumoniae and the heart makes the discovery of new associations more feasible.

Thyroid cancer incidence
Article Abstract:
Many of the excess thyroid cancers attributed to the Chernobyl nuclear accident could instead be due to heightened screening and reporting of the disease. To measure the effect of screening, data was studied for the incidence of thyroid cancer among children who had earlier received radiation treatment for other diseases. The increased incidence attributable to screening is comparable to that shown in Belarus following the Chernobyl accident.

Childhood thyroid cancer in Belarus
Article Abstract:
Reports of sharply increased thyroid cancers among children in Belarus are equivocal because they may reflect the increased surveillance of the area as well the effects of radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear accident. Thyroid cancer rates for the most heavily contaminated areas must be compared to other areas and to the size of the given population, rather than being based just on the number of cancer cases.
