A spectrum of an extrasolar planet
Article Abstract:
The measurement of the infrared spectrum of the transiting extrasolar planet HD 209458b by using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope is presented. The modest size of the Spitzer Space Telescope has limited the measurement to the brightest transiting planet systems, whereas the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope might provide a sufficient photon flux to measure the spectrum of a transiting hot Earth orbiting a nearby lower-main-sequence star.
