Abrupt mid-twentieth-century decline in Antarctic sea-ice extent from whaling records
Article Abstract:
A warming climate could lead to a decline in Antarctic sea-ice extent, although there are no clear trends shown from direct global estimates of the Antarctic sea-ice cover. Early ship records and satellite observations have been compared, indicating that sea-ice extent in the 1970s was less than during the 1930s. However analysis of whaling records shows that the Antarctic summer sea-ice edge has moved southwards by 2.8 degrees of latitude between the 1950s and early 1970s. This indicates a reduction in the area covered by sea ice.

Ocean circulation off east Antarctica affects ecosystem structure and sea-ice extent
Article Abstract:
Research examining the oceanography and ecosystem structure along 3,500 km of the coastline of the east Antarctic is described. Sea-ice and biological productivity are thought to be determined by ocean circulation.
