After the hurricane: a massive animal rescue

Hurricane Andrew caused the loss of homes for countless families as well as pets. The Pet Owners Alliance established a massive animal rescue campaign to reunite pets and their owners. Some 2,000 laboratory monkeys also escaped from the Perrine Primate Center.

Education is important in preventing cruelty to animals. Animal rights advocates must be at the forefront of introducing the subject into school curricula. The use of videotapes and role playing are good techniques for teaching humane values.

The laws in US states governing a student's right to refuse to dissect animals in school are discussed. Alternatives to dissection using CD-ROMs which allow students to conduct a virtual-reality dissection are evaluated.
