Alternative approaches to aerial censusing of elk
Article Abstract:
Censusing is difficult to carry out on groups of animals because aerial counts often miss more of the smaller groups and estimates are therefore biased. Previous studies have used a weighted estimate to solve the problem. A new study of elk in the upper Madison Drainage, Yellowstone National Park, investigates estimation of total numbers by simulations that use the Petersen method to give information on group size versus visibility. Comparison with more traditional methods suggests that Petersen may be a suitable alternative.
