An abrupt transition in colony founding behaviour in the ant Messor pergandei
Article Abstract:
Then geographic variation in the colony founding strategies of newly mated female desert seed-harvester ants, Messor pergandei, was investigated using interspecific hybrid zone analytical techniques. The two colony founding strategies, haplometrosis and pleometrosis, were found in distinct geographic regions. Foundresses that favor haplometrosis or founding a colony alone, are more aggressive suggesting that founding strategy is influenced by genotypic traits and is maintained by selection.

Undertaking specialization in the desert leaf-cutter ant Acromyrmex versicolor
Article Abstract:
Some species of ants divide labour between workers of different sizes, a specialization that may increase the efficiency of the colony. A new study investigates undertaking behaviour in the desert leaf-cutter ant to discover whether undertaking is a specialized task and to determine the influence of internal and external factors. Results suggest that internal differences among workers determine undertaking specialization which benefits overall colony efficiency.

Sex ratio determination by queens and workers in the ant Phedole desertorum
Article Abstract:
Studies of the ant Pheidole desertorum have shown that workers are more closely related to reproductive females than males. The hypothesis that queens top workers from rearing reproductive females by giving workers immature reproductive broods of both sexes was tested. Workers reared available reproductive females and did not rear available males.
