An improved test of linearity in dominance hierarchies containing unknown or tied relationships
Article Abstract:
A modified method effectively tests the linearity in a set of dominance hierarchies having unknown or tied relationships. The effectiveness of linearity in a set of dominance relationships is given by a randomization test. This test uses Landau's linearity index as the test statistic and considers both the known and unknown relationships. Dyads with a known non-tied dominance relationship, a tied dominance relationship and an unknown dominance relationship, and structural zero dyads are differentiated.

'Friendship' for fitness in chimpanzees?
Article Abstract:
Directing sociopositive behaviour to individuals of the opposite sex in a captive colony of chimpanzees does not produce reproductive benefits, according to research designed to establish whether services are exchanged directly for fitness benefits instead of copulations. Regardless of the oestrous state of the females, males did not father more children with those females that they groomed, shared food with or supported more frequently during the period of inferred conception.

Towards the integration of social dominance and spatial structure
Article Abstract:
A model has been used to investigate the consequences of two different assumptions about the function of dominance interactions. Ranks seem to differentiate more clearly at high than at low intensity of aggression.
