Apocalypse cow
Article Abstract:
The introduction of cattle onto part of the range of the endangered deer species, huemul or Hippocamelus bisulcus, in the Patagonian region of southern Chile, has degraded the deer's habitat, changed their food-gathering behavior and depleted their population. The cattle are raised to provide area residents with beef, which many consider a high-status food. The cattle are allowed to graze on national park land because the Chilean government lacks the funds to patrol the park and enforce existing wildlife conservation laws. Until this situation is rectified, the huemul population will continue to decrease.

The restructuring of the zoo included the creation of innovative education programs, attractive mini-exhibits, and conservation outreach field projects. The zoo received an award from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.
