...As consortium plans free SNP map of human genome
Article Abstract:
Researchers worldwide will be permitted free access to a map of the variations in the human genetic code that could be connected with common diseases. Work on this map is set to be funded by 10 leading pharmaceutical concerns. This initiative aims to identify as many as 300,000 variations, known as single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), in the 3 billion nucleotide base pairs that form the human genome. It is anticipated that an SNP map will initially assist in cutting the incidence of side effects from existing drugs.

Fisheries science: all at sea when it comes to politics?
Article Abstract:
The government has failed to pay attention to the scientists' warnings of the dangers of overfishing which resulted to the disappearance of fish stocks. Scientists should change their methods of managing fisheries since their previous advice has been ignored. Effective fisheries management known as effort control includes controlling the size and fishing area of boats. This would eliminate the need to set catch limits based on uncertainties in the fish population biology.
