Austrian system squeezes out young clinical researchers
Article Abstract:
Austrian clinical researchers must work so often with patients, as administrators and as teachers that little time is left for the laboratory research necessary for tenure. A survey of 450 members of Innsbruck University's medical faculty found that non-research work deprives researchers of all but five hours a week in which to conduct research, hardly enough time for producing the large amount of published research required for tenure. However, the federal and state governments are unsure of how to reduce the researchers' work load.

Battle lines drawn between 'nanobacteria' researchers
Article Abstract:
The University of Kuopi, Finland, has been asked by a Finnish scientist to formally investigate the work of one of its researchers who claims to have discovered a new form of life, called nanobacteria. Critics of Olavi Kajander say he has not produced any biochemical evidence that nanobacteria particles are alive and complain that his promotion of his theories is unethical. Despite the controversy, the Academy of Finland continues to support Kajander's work.

Austrian universities come under scrutiny...
Article Abstract:
The level of biomedical research in Austria is low, compared to other European countries, due to the misdirected policies for appointments in universities. Academic appointments are made on the basis of age rather than competence. An international review committee, appointed by Austrian Biochemical Society, studies the factors responsible for poor performance of Austrian research institutions and suggests solutions.
