Avalanche!
Article Abstract:
The huge majority of the approximately one million avalanches rolling down slopes of snow-covered mountaints throughouth the world do little damage. However, in the Alps, which has dense human population, the incidents present a threeat to skies, property and the tourist trade. The Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos is striving to gain an understanding of avalanches.

Ukraine deluged by protests over plans for Danube delta
Article Abstract:
Ukraine is coming under growing international pressure to halt the construction of a shipping canal through the ecologically sensitive Danube delta. Critics say the project will damage some important fish and wetland bird habitats, and increase erosion on the Black Sea coast.
