Back to a frightening future
Article Abstract:
Multidrug-resistant strains of tuberculosis (TB) are a grave threat to health in both developed and developing countries. These TB strains are difficult to treat because the antibiotics traditionally used have lost effectiveness. However, Ying Zhang and colleagues have succeeded in determining the genetic character of the anti-TB drug isoniazid's molecular target. This suggests it may be possible to restore potency to some of these drugs. A major international effort to regulate the use of antibiotics is necessary to prevent the development of more drug-resistant infectious pathogens.

A microbial minimalist
Article Abstract:
A new method for genome sequencing is quick, efficient and analyzes 25 bacterial and parasite pathogens in five minutes. The method involves the use of a shotgun strategy, that can be applied to the entire genome, and analysis with assembly and alignment software. Analyses of the Mycoplasma (M.) genitalium and Haemophilus influenzae genomes reveal that one third of the open reading frames of both the genomes have sequences without any biological function. M. genitalium has the smallest genome and the study gives an idea of the minimum number of functional genes necessary.

The future of public health
Article Abstract:
Public health emphasizes prevention of disease, with a focus on populations and communities rather than the individual patient. However the benefits of biomedical science and public health have not been made available to all. The challenge for biomedical science and public health will be to develop the population-based interventions required to reduce the burdens of disease and disability in industrialized and developing countries.
