Basic research revisited
Article Abstract:
The National Science Board has formulated a public statement on the value of basic research in response to a request made by the Commission on the Future of the National Science Foundation asking the board to broaden its role in setting national science policy. As a result of political and economic pressures and its desire to protect its budget, however, the science board has made questionable decisions, such as renaming basic and applied research as curiosity-driven and strategic research.
