Beating the code breakers
Article Abstract:
Quantum cryptography, or the use of quantum mechanics to ensure the secrecy of communications, can be realized by using the interference of very dim light pulses as a key distribution. This distribution permits two parties to receive the same random series of numbers, called the key, with near certainty that no one else has received it. Charles Bennett of IBM Research devised an apparatus for producing a code based on a choice between two non-orthogonal states of a quantum system. The uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics keeps unauthorized persons from receiving the code without disclosing themselves.

Geometric quantum computation using nuclear magnetic resonance
Article Abstract:
The operation of fault-tolerant quantum logic gates needs conditional quantum dynamics where one sub-systems undergoes a coherent evolution dependent on the quantum state of another sub-system. Nuclear magnetic-resonance techniques have already demonstrated simple quantum information processing and geometric phase shifts. A nuclear magnetic resonance experiment was performed where a conditional Berry phase was implemented.

Implementation of a quantum search algorithm on a quantum computer
Article Abstract:
Research shows that a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum computer is a suitable device to resolve the fast quantum search algorithm first introduced by the physicist Grover. The NMR machine is capable of more rapid searches than traditional computer technology. The use of heteronuclear NMR is discussed. Further development of NMR computers will provide enhanced computational power.
