Homegrown advantages
Article Abstract:
Vietnam has developed agroforestry systems designed to solve numerous environmental problems such as deforestation, increased flooding, erosion and soil contamination. Scientists have discovered some indigenous tree species that could be interplanted together with agricultural crops. The system fosters ecological equilibrium and at the same time provides local inhabitants with income. Another system tackles the problemof acid sulphate soils (ASS) by combining the native Melaleuca, rice and fish/shrimps on ASS land. Interlacing canals provide sufficient water to inhibit the oxidation of acid-generating soil components.

Belize batbusters
Article Abstract:
Bat researcher Bruce Miller uses a sound analyzer to identify and track insectivorous bat species in Belize. Miller records bat voiceprints and matches them with species-specific calls that he has already archived. He also maps species' locations and cross-analyzes their habitat for vegetation and topography. Some of the bats studied include naked-backed bats, little brown bats, mustached bats, brown sac-wings, shaggy bats and molossid bats. Miller has recorded a variety of bat vocalizations that remain unidentified. He hopes to trap representatives of these species, identify and release them.
