Biotech drugs comes to market
Article Abstract:
Israeli biotechnology companies are soon to market several innovative drugs including Beta-interferon and Copaxone, which treat multiple sclerosis, and a human growth hormone that has been genetically engineered. Much of the research behind these drugs was performed by Weizmann Institute professors and yet commercial application of research is discouraged by limits on the tenure track. Professors find their careers stunted by commercial contacts despite encouragement of basic research. Many biotechnology firms start because venture funding is available but most fail.

Patent clash looming over cloning techniques?
Article Abstract:
The decision by the University of Hawaii and ProBio America Inc to apply for patents on the technology used for the reproducible cloning of mice could create considerable controversy. The application may be opposed by the Roslin Institute in Scotland, which has two broad patent applications pending covering cloning techniques. UK concern Protein Pharmaceuticals Ltd has negotiated a licence on the ProBio America technology for research into the cloning of farm animals.

Biotech industry seeks 'honest brokers'
Article Abstract:
Leading industrialists have claimed that the momentum for developing biotechnology has been adversely affected by the consumer outcry against genetically modified crops, at a meeting in France. The 'Biovision' meeting aimed to create dialogue in the biotechnology debate, and was dominated by discussion of agricultural genetics, bioethics and public perception, which was seen as the main challenge to be addressed.
