Bird reactions to observer clothing color: implications for distance-sampling techniques

Article Abstract:

Researchers found that color in clothing affected the closeness to which a human could approach different bird species before the birds flushed. This information is relevant to researchers employing distance-sampling techniques. The researchers were investigating whether the same control which governs birds' choice of mate, that is, a preference for birds with the same coloring, would affect approach distances. Approaches wearing an orange vest, tested against approaches not wearing the vest, lengthened approach distances only for those birds with no orange or red coloring.

Estimation of effective area of bird scarers

Article Abstract:

A researcher developed a model for measuring bird scarer effectiveness and effectiveness over time. The model involves comparing birds' rates of stay in units of area containing equal distributions of food, with distance from a bird scaring device. The researcher examined the effectiveness of mannequins, kites and stuffed crows on rufous turtle doves in a flight cage using this method, and found that the use of a stuffed crow together with a crow call had a larger effective range. The model will require modification for use in the field.

Bird poisonings with cyclodienes in suburbia: links to historic use on turf

Article Abstract:

The urban and suburban sites of New York, Maryland and New Jersey recorded 122 cases of bird mortality due to poisoning with cyclodiene and organochlorine insecticides. The two insecticides were banned in the 1970's after they were use excessively to curb the scarab beetle population. However, the turf soil is still contaminated by them. Seventeen percent of song bird deaths are due to cyclodienes poisoning.
