Bird species diversity
Article Abstract:
Phylogenetic studies indicate the presence of many new species of birds. A re-evaluation of data on morphological differences, based on the phylogenetic species concept, shows that almost 50% of the recognized subspecies are phylogenetic. This figure is less than the almost 100% increase in bird species reported by other researchers. Field identification guides recognize different subspecies and will not be significantly affected by the increased number of species.

Mechanical power output of bird flight
Article Abstract:
The mechanical power output of black-billed magpies in flight has been established and plotted as a U-shaped curve, thus supporting aerodynamic theory. Experiments using electromyographic equipment to establish in vivo bone-strain measurements were performed at various stages of forward flight and during hovering. The mechanical power output of other birds including the European starling and Laughing gull are also shown.

Winter torpor in a large bird
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the physiological changes which occur in the Australian Tawny Frogmouth when these birds enter periods of winter torpor. The occurrence of torpor in birds is discussed.
