Black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) recovery update
Article Abstract:
Efforts toward the recovery program for the black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) in 1998 proved to be successful. A total of 425 ferrets were born, with 321 kits surviving weaning. The largest number came from the captive breeding facilities of the Fish and Wildlife Service's National Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center. The Phoenix Zoo and Toronto Zoo reported high birth and survival rates. In South Dakota, 70 kits were reported from 56 adult ferrets. Furthermore, the Arizona Game and Fish Dept produced 26 kits from on-site breeding.

A bright decade for the red wolf
Article Abstract:
There are now about 70 to 80 red wolves in the wilderness of North Carolina and the future looks very good for the endangered species. Prior to this, red wolves survived only in a few state breeding centers as late as 1987. However, four pairs of captive-bred wolves were released onto the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in September of that year. Ten years later, in 1997, the number of release sites has grown to three islands, three wildlife refuges and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

New hope for the Schaus swallowtail
Article Abstract:
The Schaus swallowtail butterfly, 'Papilio aristodemus ponceanus,' has recovered from its endangered status after the release of hundreds of captive butterflies at protected sites in Florida. To enhance their habitat, hardwood hammocks were planted and ground spraying of mosquito insecticide was prohibited. The decline in the species' population has been attributed to loss of habitat, aerial spraying of insecticides and over-collection.
