Developing motor neurons rescued from programmed and axotomy-induced cell death by GDNF
Article Abstract:
The survival of mammalian midbrain dopaminergic neurons is facilitated by the neurotrophic factor, the glial-cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). The GDNF also avoids natural programmed cell death, occurring in avian motor neurons. The survival of neurons is essential for the progressive development of vertebrate nervous system. The increased death of neurons will result in nervous disorders.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor prevents the death of motoneurons in newborn rats after nerve section
Article Abstract:
In vivo experiments with newborn rats show that neurotrophic factor derived from brain (BDNF) prevents the death of motor neurons that have been axotomized. BDNF appears to serve a mediating function in the regeneration of motor axons toward the periphery after neurons have been inflicted with lesions. They also promote the survival of motor neurons in vivo.
