Budget cuts force Sweden to consider CERN pull-out
Article Abstract:
The Swedish ministry of education is proposing an estimated one hundred and fifty million Swedish kroner reduction to its contributions to international research programmes. As a result, the Swedish government may have to withdraw from the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). The proposed reduction will benefit the eligibility of Swedish economy to qualify for membership to the European economic and monetary union. Swedish scientists, however, vehemently oppose the proposed withdrawal and have campaigned against withdrawal from the CERN.

Staff pay cost of keeping CERN collider on target
Article Abstract:
The basic salary of the staff at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) is being cut by 2.5% this year, the automatic index-linking of salaries has been removed for 1998 and 1999 and a full review of the salary structure is being carried out to further identify ways to cut costs. These measures are being taken to build the Large Hadron Collider by 2005 as planned in spite of the governing council's decision to accept a substantial budget cut.

Staff face pay cuts as CERN prepares to tighten its belt
Article Abstract:
Staff at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland, are facing a one-year 2.5% pay cut in exchange for an extra five-and-a-half days leave. The proposal was made to bring down operational costs of CERN to cope with the budget reduction of 8.5% for 1997 and 1998 and then 9.3% for two more years thereafter, following Germany's decision to reduce its subscription next year.
