C60 chemistry expands
Article Abstract:
Significant progress has been made in determining the chemical properties of the C60 or buckminsterfullerene molecule and related fullerenes. C60, a large molecule made up of tri-coordinated carbon atoms in both five-membered and six-membered rings on the surface of the molecular cage, may presage the development of many new materials. H.W. Kroto and colleagues found the sites of bromination in the two new species C60Br6 and C60Br8 using X-ray diffraction. In addition, the first organometallic polymers with C60 units bridged by palladium atoms have been identified.

A new hydrocarbon cage
Article Abstract:
A new hydrocarbon molecule, C36H36, has been synthesized and given the name spheriphane. F. Vogtle, J. Gross, C. Seel and M. Nieger produced the nearly spherical, cage-shaped molecule through molecular folding. This process generates a precursor molecule which is in turn converted to spheriphane most optimally by intermolecular three-fold coupling. Spectral analysis of C36H36 demonstrated its symmetry. The production of this new hydrocarbon may lead to the synthesis of new supramolecules with three-dimensional empty spaces.

New ribbons and threads
Article Abstract:
Novel molecular ribbons are designed using threaded molecules called rotaxanes. The seven ring system represents the longest sequence of benzene rings connected in this manner and its crystal x-ray analysis shows a repetitive folded back fluted arrangement. The development of molecular-scale devices, such as information storage and energy conversion devices, is aided by such rapid developments in molecular engineering procedures.
